What Are Metric Machine Screws?
Metric machine screws are precision metric fasteners used primarily in metal components. They are fully threaded and require either a pre-tapped hole or a nut for installation. There is no self-tapping point, so the mating thread must already exist before installation.Metric machine screws feature tight dimensional tolerances. That consistency is what makes metric machine screws reliable in assemblies that require a repeatable tight fit, including electronics and precision industrial equipment.
Types of Metric Machine Screws
Flat Head (DIN 963 / DIN 965)
Metric flat head machine screws feature a countersunk head that sits flush with the surface when fully installed. They are used in applications that require a low-profile finish, or where a raised head would interfere with mating components. Metric flat head screws are available with a slotted drive or a Phillips drive (DIN 963 is a slotted drive; DIN 965 is a Phillips drive).Pan Head (DIN 7985)
Metric pan head machine screws are designed with a low-profile rounded head that has a flat bearing surface. Pan head metric machine screws are a general-purpose option used across a wide range of applications. Available in Phillips drive.Cheese Head (DIN 84)
Cheese head metric machine screws have a cylindrical head with a flat top and relatively high profile. The larger head diameter provides a strong bearing surface and good resistance to pull-through. Available in a slotted drive.Drive Options for Metric Machine Screws: Slotted vs. Phillips
Slotted drives are straightforward and work with a standard flat-blade screwdriver. Slotted drive machine screws are common in simple assemblies and low-torque applications.A Phillips drive allows for better torque transfer and is much less likely to slip during installation. Phillips-drive metric machine screws are usually the more practical choice for production environments and power-tool use.
How to Choose the Right Metric Machine Screw
- Head Type: Flat head screws are used where the fastener needs to sit flush with or below the surface. Pan head and cheese head screws leave the head raised above the surface, which is fine for most general applications, but can be a factor in tight clearance situations.
- Drive Type: If installation is done by hand in low-torque situations, a slotted drive works well. For higher torque requirements or power tool installation, the Phillips drive gives better control and reduces cam-out risk.
- Material: Material selection is based primarily on the type of environment the machine screws will be exposed to. Stainless steel machine screws are used for applications with moisture or chemical exposure. Zinc-plated steel works well for indoor or environments that have only minimal moisture exposure.
- Size: Metric machine screws are sized by thread diameter and length.
Materials and Finishes for Metric Machine Screws
Stainless Steel A2 (304)
Stainless steel machine screws in metric offer excellent corrosion resistance. A2 stainless is often used for electronics, food-adjacent equipment, outdoor assemblies, and anywhere moisture or mild chemical exposure is a factor. We stock stainless steel metric machine screws in flat head, pan head, and cheese head styles.Zinc-Plated Steel (CR+3)
Zinc plating adds a layer of corrosion protection to carbon steel machine screws. Zinc-plated steel metric machine screws are practical and cost-effective options for general-purpose indoor applications. CR+3 zinc plating is RoHS compliant. Available in flat head and pan head configurations.Common Applications for Metric Machine Screws
Metric machine screws are used across a wide range of industries and assembly types:- Custom OEM components
- Electronics and electrical components, including PCB mounting
- Machinery and industrial equipment
- Automotive interior components
- Panel and enclosure fastening applications
